Mistral and Dusk

Some more stuff with my little red riding hood character, whom I’ve named Mistral. It’s kind of a dumb joke, because yes, it is a font, but I like it as a name too. It’s cute.
Her shadow wolf familiar is named Dusk and they go around collecting souls, probably usually of younger children, as she comes off less menacing than the usually black-hooded reapers, which are normally aimed towards adults.

Magical Guys

Did up some designs based off a sketch from a few weeks ago - basically, a group of magical guys.

I know there's already a magical boy anime out there, but was thinking how I want a magical guy group/show/whatever where they're buff guys who are manly men or something that are a-okay with wearing frilly things and doing kawaii poses while battling evil with magic. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the current magical boy show - to be honest I haven't watched it - but I dunno, I wanted a change up.

These three (they're unfortunately nameless as of now) transform using magical belt buckles and wear kilts and bows and earrings and are awesome.

Soul Windows

Working on some new print designs. These are based off some pieces of jewelry I made up a while ago.
Ah, here:

They were okay, but could use some revising, but at least with prints, I can do a bit more stuff and add more detail c:

Kaeru Fukiya

Got in the mood to do some character design work up this past week and was kinda drawing inspiration from Kung Fu Panda, Samurai Jack, the 2012 TMNT show, and the Thundercats reboot designs. So I drew a ronin-like frog-girl thing?

I was going based off a poison dart frog, as those are some of my favourite kinds of frogs, which explains the last image, where i was playing with various colour various found in poison dart frogs. I ended up going with a basic green scheme though, because it went more with the earthy tones I went with for her outfit.

The first two images are her turn around sheets, one that is her in her base outfit, one that has her straw hat and cloak. She's kind of like an assassin type character I guess, so she's sneaky and fast on her feet. She uses a tanto sword that she wears on her waist in the back. I guess as a poison dart frog, she would also use poison darts or at least poison to an extent. Actually, her name references her species heavily - "kaeru" means "frog" and "fukiya" means "blow gun" and is actually what a Japanese blow gun is called.

So yes, her name is Frog Blow Gun or Blow Gun Frog. I'm very original.

The third image is some costume variations with colour variations. I based her outfit off both Japanese robes and kimonos as well as more simplistic kung fu outfits. I also looked a lot at Tigress' outfit from Kung Fu Panda, which is a very close-fitting, streamlined design that is still very elegant. It really matches her character.

And the last image is just, again, some colour variations found in poison dart frogs. I took inspiration from a handful of them to come up with the final scheme.

Little Red Reaping Hood

Is Little Red Reaping Hood a thing?

If not, I'd like it to be a thing. I prefer cute Grim Reapers over the traditional creepy ones I think :3

Nina Run Cycle

It's been a while, but hey look! An animation! Here's a small animation exercise featuring my character, Nina, running with shots from the front, side, and three quarter view. I started it a while ago, but just now got the time and energy to finish it. Everything was done up in Adobe Flash.

Recent Scuplts

Some sculpts I've worked on in the last bit of time. Most of these are still WIPs and I'll probably post more for them later after they've been posed, probably.

Anyway, here's what we have: Lewis from the Mystery Skulls: Ghost animated video, my gardener girl, my Gemsona design Prehnite, the pixie counterpart to my fairy Lemon, Lime, and for fun, a quick head sculpt of Markiplier.

Shaman? Design

Design I did up a few weeks ago. Not really sure what she/he? is, but I'm really fond of the design. Will come up with a colour scheme later and might model it, for funsies.

Field Medic Costume

Had a dream the other night where I was wearing an outfit similar to this. Overall, it's kind of impractical for a field medic outfit, but hey, it's cute. It has puffy sleeves and a cute hat and leggings and neat little boots and leather armor.

Also, a few students in the class I'm teaching right now have been using brush pens a lot, so I bought some to try out. Still getting used to the stroke and nature of it all, but it's fun to play with. Have some more stuff coming up soon.

Pumpkin Warrior

Haven't posted here in a while, so major apologies for that. However, what I'm posting now is actually a bit of an older piece - back from 2013 actually, but I rather liked it. I had gone to the Renaissance Festival that year and saw a neat pumpkin-themed dagger made out of glass by one of the booths there.

I really liked it so when I got home, I drew up a pumpkin-themed warrior girl, with a pumpkin-theme shield, sword, and hat and a pan flute. She's kind of like an autumn/harvest warrior in a way, too, cause of the leaves and such, but eh, she was a fun draw.

The bottom image is just some different colour schemes I tried out for fun.

"Secret Identity" character designs

Character designs for Donovan and Royce, from Secret Identity. For these, the author gave me actors to reference for them, Steve McQueen and James Dean, respectively. I went with pretty basic "thug" outfits for their regular attire, but of course, then we have their "superhero" personas.

Designing Batman and Robin based outfits was fun and it was a challenge incorporating their birds (a raven and a blackbird) into their outfit while still keeping them colorful. At one point, the script mentions the outfits don't necessary fit Donovan and Royce, hence Donovan's slight belly there.

"Super Complicated" character designs

I forgot to post this after I posted the comic back in April (?), so here they are, however long after the fact they may be. For Super Complicated, I only did very quick concepts for the four characters that appear and speak. The top image is just quick brainstorming, which got refined in the full body sketches below. The third image of course, are just some color keys I did up for all four of them.

Another comic commission by Bobby Mort. I really enjoy these short comic commissions. They really challenge me and this much more so, as he wanted a style that was more like western comics. It was hard for me to make a full on jump though, so my usual style's still there. I'll be posting the main character designs for this up soon, as well for the last comic, as I realized I forgot to post them back when I said I would, haha.

Lemon Turnaround Video

Finished up work on Lemon today and decided to pose her. Here's the resulting turnaround.

Lemon Sculpt WIP 2

Some more WIP shots of Lemon.

Lemon Sculpt WIP

Today in class, I decided to start on a full body sculpt. The kids are actually moving quite fast in the program - which is very nice to see. I gave them the option that later they might get a chance to work with modeling a body if they wanted, so was showing them the run down of that this morning.

Anyway, decided to model Lemon, my chubby, little fairy character. I think she's coming along rather nicely.

Gardener Color Schemes

Decided to play with random colors schemes for that gardener girl doodle. Not really sure what I want and some of these are just all over the place (ie. the first one of the bottom row, haha), but I think I likethe first and third one of the top row.

Gardening

Some sketches I did while waiting for my flight a few months ago. I think I had seen a friend's designs for a gardening girl on FB and I guess had gardening in my head, so I guess I did something similar. The little design on the dog is supposed to be a leaf, cause why not, haha.

Star Breakers

Another commission from the same guy who commissioned the "Super Complicated" comic. He wanted me to cartoonify a photo of a group for a Star Trek-based parody. The top image is the final product, edited to look like an old VHS video feed. I used a very nice tutorial for it that you can see here: http://mikeyjam.buzznet.com/user/journal/12237761/tutorial-getting-vhs-tv-effect/

The bottom image is the clean version and my inspiration was around the pop art styles of Roy Lichtenstien's comic panel paintings. They wanted the image done in my style though, so I had to mainly play with the image's line weight, especially with the hair.

Little Miss Conquest

Character designs I did up for the recent Nickelodeon Animated Short Pitch Submission. I actually only JUST found the response email and unfortunately I didn't get picked, buuuut whatever, I did try, hahah.

But yes, character designs. The first three were featured in the pitch, though I included the fourth design, because I really did like how it turned out. From top to bottom, we have:

Nina – A rambunctious, imaginative 9-year-old, Nina spends most of her time daydreaming about taking over the world. She actively tries to accomplish this, but finds her exploits constantly thwarted by her nemesis and babysitter, Ellen. Nina is a brown-haired, brown-eyed girl, usually dressed in a red sweater and a black shirt. She also normally wears a rather puffy, green raincoat and bright red rain boots. She frequently tries to be intimidating, but due to her short stature, finds her efforts wasted.

Archibald Aardvark – Nina's plush aardvark. In Nina's mind, he is her ever-loyal sidekick and butler, who's always willing to lend a claw in her quest for world domination. Archibald is a large, plush aardvark, dressed in a collar and bow tie and wears a monocle. He rarely leaves Nina's side and speaks in an elegant British accent (at least in Nina's mind).

Ellen – Nina's babysitter. Even though Nina's antics are generally small-scale, this full-time college student has to deal with them constantly and finds them quite tiring after a while. Ellen is a dark-skinned young woman with dark brown hair, usually worn up in a pony tail. She dresses in a white, button-up shirt, purple sweater vest, and blue jeans. Despite her calm, academic appearance, she is quite athletic, which is helpful in keeping up with Nina and her various schemes.

The young boy included at the bottom is Simon, who was either going to be Nina's friend or cousin, who would visit regularly and assist her in her schemes. He would create random little gadgets and devices for her to use.
