Chameleon Plush WIP

A little project I worked on in between classes today. I started on a little model of a plush chameleon, based off my character Ferdinand's chameleon form. I need to go in and add his stitching, as well as some texturing stuff later : )

New Hat!

Ahhh there. Fixed Tricorne's tricorne and started to add the tassels onto it. The hat was a simple model made in Maya and later divided in Zbrush so I can work on it. I still need to add the seam line to it later once I get a hold of the Alpha brush I want.

Burton Style Colour

Here's a coloured version of one of the pen sketches. I basically just de-saturated the colours so they look creepier.

Burton Style?

Here are some Style Study sketches. A friend had suggested I try my hand at new styles for portfolio work, so I was looking for some more dynamic styles. Dynamic here meaning significantly different from my own. So, I figured Tim Burton's fun, strange style would be interesting to try out.

The Study actually started with the bottom three sketches, because I wanted to practice drawing my own characters, Veronica and Ferdinand, in that style. There are certain things I noticed in Burton's style that I was trying to get down: The large, spaced eyes, the lowered mouths, the usually very thin, tiny chins. Even the line quality is unique and I found I didn't really get it as I like to do my sketchy bases. Most of his work, though it is very scrawly in it's own right, seems to make single, deliberate lines that aren't perfect. I noticed this when I was looking at the facial shapes: they were squiggly to a degree and not perfectly smooth, but they worked and compliment the rest of the drawing well, as most of the lines are like that.

Another thing I was looking at was his use of shapes, as well as his warped proportions. I remember hearing in a special feature - I think on Corpse Bride - how creating the models for Burton's thin characters were rather hard, especially in making them stable enough to support their own weight. Many may think of Jack Skellington when I mention his proportions too. I kept that design in mind for Ferdinand's tall figure, as well as for Veronica's. I made her much, much shorter than she's supposed to be, because that's how Burton's proportions can work. For her, I kept thinking of the Mayor from the Nightmare Before Christmas: short legs with an overly large coat and cone shaped arms.

More Tricorne WIP

More of Tricorne's face! He now has a somewhat crap hat, but I will fix that later. :D

Tricorne Bust WIP

A work in progress of a sculpt I started FOREVER. I had started it back at the beginning of the summer, but because of time constraints and whatnot, I couldn't find the time to get back in to work on it.

All I had gotten done the half hour I worked on it (I had to spend an hour reacquainting myself with Zbrush, hahaha) was this:

So I've gotten a lot done in the last... week or so since I've reopened it. Hopefully I can get the hat and coat done soon, though I'll probably have to hop into Maya to take care of those.

Chameleon Charm

I probably should've posted something on this earlier and I would be lying if I said it slipped my mind. It's always on my mind, hahaha.

Anyway, for the past year, I've been working on fleshing out a comic series called Chameleon Charm. One reason I never bothered to mention it on here or post anything related to it was because I had a separate Tumblr set aside just for the comic and I urge you guys to check it out here: Chameleon Charm Tumblr.

I post all the updates and sketches and whatnot over there. There's a ton of stuff on there now, because as I said, I've been working on it for the past year.

Anyway! The REAL reason of this post it to share with you guys the link to the actual comic! Yes, after a year, the comic was finally launched. The comic can be viewed over on CupofComics.com or here: Chameleon Charm Comic

The comic updates one page ever Tuesday, so I hope you check it out

Fez

Currently learning Flash and our first assignment is to familiarize ourselves with the tools by creating a character. I was just doodling around and came up with this. It's more of a joke design really. This is Fez, a character based off the others from the Mad Hatter Corps. People have been telling me to do a Fez design (mainly because of Doctor Who) but I've been putting it off until now.

He's the first kid character I have for that particular group. I don't know if I'll keep him around or not. I have it in my head that he's a stubborn little guy who likes to follow the other Hats around - namely Tricorne and Feathercap - because he wants to be a bounty hunter himself, but he's too young for the group.

I realized after I did this up that he looks an awful lot like Gatsby, in terms of hair and facial expression and the fact they're both overweight >< I don't know why I tend to gravitate towards that setup for characters. However, if that's the case, I could always say the two are brothers or something. Haha I'm not sure.
